applies to all employees at shop makers locations purpose shop makers uses surveillance cameras in our retail stores to promote the safety and security of employees, customers, and property, and to deter and investigate theft, vandalism, workplace incidents, and other security related matters scope this policy applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors at any retail premises operated by shop makers across canada, including mall based and street front store locations and any associated back of house, storage, and office areas in british columbia, alberta, saskatchewan, manitoba, and ontario it governs the use of video surveillance in company operated premises and reflects shop makers' commitment to complying with the criminal code of canada , applicable federal and provincial privacy legislation, and the guidance issued by the office of the privacy commissioner of canada and provincial privacy commissioners camera use & location cameras are installed in common and public areas of the store, including store entrances and exits sales floors cash register and pos areas stockrooms, receiving areas, and back of house corridors cameras are not installed in bathrooms change rooms or fitting rooms any other location where employees or customers have a reasonable expectation of privacy cameras operate on a continuous recording basis, and footage is stored securely in accordance with section 6 of this policy audio recording shop makers does not record audio at any of its premises, in any province all cameras operated by shop makers capture video only , with no audio component this standard applies uniformly across all locations british columbia — in accordance with the personal information protection act (bc pipa) and section 184 of the criminal code of canada , audio recording is not used signage will notify individuals of video surveillance only alberta — in accordance with the personal information protection act (alberta pipa), guidance from the office of the information and privacy commissioner of alberta, and section 184 of the criminal code of canada , audio recording is not used signage will notify individuals of video surveillance only saskatchewan — in accordance with the privacy act (saskatchewan), the personal information protection and electronic documents act (pipeda), and section 184 of the criminal code of canada , audio recording is not used signage will notify individuals of video surveillance only manitoba — in accordance with the privacy act (manitoba), pipeda, and section 184 of the criminal code of canada , audio recording is not used signage will notify individuals of video surveillance only ontario — in accordance with pipeda, ontario common law (including the tort of intrusion upon seclusion), and section 184 of the criminal code of canada , audio recording is not used signage will notify individuals of video surveillance only any future change to this position — such as the use of audio recording for a specific, time limited investigative purpose — must be reviewed and approved in advance by people & culture and, where appropriate, legal counsel, and must comply with all applicable privacy laws notice & consent visible signage will be displayed at all store entrances and within applicable areas to notify employees, customers, and visitors that video surveillance is in use, the purpose of the surveillance, and how to contact shop makers with questions employees acknowledge the existence and purpose of this surveillance by signing the employee handbook acknowledgement at the time of hire; and continuing employment at shop makers after being notified of this policy this policy reflects shop makers' reasonable business purpose of protecting people and property and is consistent with the notice requirements under bc pipa, alberta pipa, pipeda, and applicable canadian case law access, use & retention of footage surveillance recordings are used only for legitimate business purposes , including but not limited to investigating theft, fraud, or vandalism investigating workplace incidents, injuries, or safety concerns investigating allegations of employee misconduct responding to law enforcement requests or legal obligations supporting insurance claims access to recordings is restricted to authorized personnel only (e g , designated members of operations, people & culture, and loss prevention) recordings will not be shared with other stores, customers, or vendors except as required by law or with the express authorization of shop makers leadership recordings are retained only as long as necessary for the stated business purpose and are automatically deleted or overwritten after 30 days , unless required to be retained longer for an ongoing investigation, legal obligation, regulatory request, or active insurance matter compliance this policy complies with the following federal and provincial laws federal — personal information protection and electronic documents act (pipeda);
